23andMe regularly hears stories from customers who have made discoveries about their genetic family and genealogy through 23andMe. This presentation seeks to demonstrate to those interested in Genetic Genealogy how those discoveries were made, and how one might go about using DNA results to address specific genealogical questions. Are you adopted and looking for biological relatives?  Would you like to confirm a suspected family relationship? Or do you want to better understand from where in the world your ancestors hail?  If your answer to any of these questions is yes, you are likely to benefit from this presentation.

Joanna Mountain

Joanna Mountain is a geneticist with a passion for ancestry genetics and genetic genealogy. She was born in England and traces her ancestry back to England, Ireland, and Scotland.  She received her PhD in Genetics (with a focus on Human population Genetics) from Stanford University. She currently represents 23andMe, a personal genomics company that provides genetic data and tools for exploring one’s ancestry, genealogy, and health. She is particularly excited about the future of genetic databases that allow distant relatives to find one another; and to extend one another’s family trees.
